We are engineering three miles of specialized, low-grade trails designed for wheelchairs, strollers, and those who prefer a steadier footing. These trails wind through the heart of our native habitat, ensuring the "wild" is within reach for everyone.
The "Surreal Peacefulness," Accessible to All.
The rugged Balcones Escarpment shouldn't be reserved only for the backcountry hiker. We are building a sanctuary where every Texan—regardless of mobility—can experience the majesty of the nature area.
By designing with accessibility at the forefront, we are eliminating barriers so that visitors with disabilities don't have to plan around obstacles, but can instead enjoy a seamless, stress-free outdoor experience.
Putting Inclusion at the Forefront
At ABKSNA, we believe that outdoor spaces should be open to everyone. In close collaboration with the disability community and Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) accessibility initiatives, we are making sure that inclusive design is woven into the very fabric of our park's construction.
Our goal is not to pave over the natural beauty of the Hill Country, but to thoughtfully integrate adaptive equipment, accessible pathways, and amenities so that public lands can be enjoyed by all.

The View from Above
The Observation Deck
Perched at a strategic vantage point on the Escarpment, our state-of-the-art observation deck offers panoramic views of the canyons. It is designed to be fully accessible, providing a safe and breathtaking "window" into the Hill Country.
A Modern Standard
Excellence in Design
From the parking area to the restrooms and picnic spots, every piece of infrastructure at ABKSNA is being built with modern accessibility standards in mind. We are setting a new benchmark for what a State Natural Area can be in the 21st century.
Beyond the Pavement: Programming & Community
True inclusion goes beyond physical pathways. It means creating opportunities for everyone to gather, play, and connect with nature together.
Inclusive Programming: We are working to support adaptive activities, such as partnerships with recreational therapy programs and accessible fishing events, ensuring that everyone has the chance to participate in active outdoor recreation alongside their peers.
Preserving Connections: Nature heals and connects us. By making ABKSNA accessible, we ensure that families can stay connected to the great outdoors through every stage and season of life, helping individuals navigate physical limitations without losing their bond with the wild.
Why It Matters
In a state where natural areas are increasingly rare, accessibility is an act of conservation. When we make it possible for a child in a wheelchair to see a Bigtooth Maple, or for a senior to hear the Golden-cheeked Warbler, we are growing the next generation of land stewards.
For Families
With stroller-friendly paths, parents can introduce their youngest children to the outdoors without the struggle of rocky ranch roads.
For Seniors
Our low-impact trails provide a safe, stable environment for older Texans to remain active and connected to the natural world.
For Mobility Users
We are eliminating the "4x4 requirement" of the nature area, ensuring the best views in the park are accessible to those using wheelchairs or walkers.
